AU state inspections (pink slip, RWC, safety cert)
NSW pink slip vs blue slip, VIC RWC on transfer, QLD Safety Certificate (TMR fees as at 1 July 2026), and the other states where inspection is event-based. Explainer for the front desk — not a licensed tester course.
Two different products: a Pink Slip (eSafety) for renewing a light vehicle over five years, and a Blue Slip (AUVIS) when the vehicle is unregistered, coming from interstate, or needs an identity check.
Pink Slip / eSafety check
When: Annual registration renewal for light vehicles more than five years old.
Validity: Can usually be obtained up to about six months before expiry — confirm on Service NSW.
Fee note: Shop-set inspection fee. Not a government stamp price.
Service NSW — eSafety / pink slip →Blue Slip / AUVIS
When: Unregistered more than three months, interstate transfer into NSW, or a defect/identity check.
Validity: Identity + safety. A QLD safety certificate is not a NSW blue slip.
Fee note: Shop-set. Authorised inspection station only.

Theory
Same job, eight names
Australia has no single “RWC.” NSW splits renew (pink / eSafety, light vehicle over five years) from identity/unreg/interstate (blue / AUVIS). Victoria uses an RWC mainly on transfer, not as an annual private-car ritual. Queensland requires a Safety Certificate to transfer; TMR gazetted $102.70 as at 1 July 2026 for a light vehicle inspection (shops may charge more if they disclose it). SA, WA, TAS, ACT and NT are mostly event-based — defect, modification, or a directed inspection. Always pair a sale with a PPSR.
How to use it
- Role
- Reception / advisor (P02) at BOOK
- Shop-day step
- BOOK → CHECK-IN
- Do
- Ask which state the plate will live in after the job. Sell the correct inspection product.
- Do not
- Do not quote a pink slip for an unregistered interstate car, or a VIC RWC as an annual NSW renew.
