VIN check-digit & vPIC decoder

ISO 3779 check-digit runs in the browser. Optional decode uses the public NHTSA vPIC API. Australian plates stay a mock until a paid rego provider is gated — we do not invent a live plate lookup.

Theory

Plate first, VIN to prove it

Australian advisors search the registration plate because that is what the customer says on the phone. The VIN is the identity the rest of the world uses: 17 characters, no I, O or Q, with an ISO 3779 check digit in position 9. The compliance plate in the engine bay (or the build plate in the door jamb) is what a pink slip / RWC inspector will compare to the windscreen VIN. They are not interchangeable with a PPSR certificate.

VIN 1HGCM82633A004352 → check digit 3. Position 9 must match the weighted sum modulo 11 (10 prints as X).

Do
Read the VIN off the car, run the check digit, then decode. If plate and VIN disagree, stop and look at the compliance plate.

Do not treat this as a live NSW/VIC/QLD rego lookup, a PPSR, or a RedBook options decode.
